Experts recently decided to open the tomb of a popular medieval Catholic saint for research purposes and ended up getting quite a shock when the peeked inside. The tomb belonged to St. Teresa of Jesus, also known as St. Teresa of Avila, who was a Discalced Carmelite nun who died in 1582. What shocked researchers was how remarkably preserved St. Teresa’s body was.
According to The Christian Tribune, the saint’s tomb is located in Spain and has not been opened since 1914. A group of Carmelite nuns, monks, and priests are now seeking to examine the relics adorning St. Teresa’s arms, which is why the tomb has been opened.
“The process to reach the silver urn that Saint Teresa’s body has is very complex,” a translation of a press release issued by the Diocese of Avila read. The release then added, “First, the marble slab in the tomb had to be removed. Later, in the room set up for the studies to which the Saint’s major relics will be subjected – and only with the presence of the scientific medical team and the members of the ecclesiastical court – has the silver tomb been opened.”
“Analyzing the foot [relic] in Rome, we saw the presence of calcareous spines that make walking almost impossible,” the priest continued. “But she walked [to] Alba de Tormes and then died, but her desire was to continue and move forward, despite the physical defects.” He then said, “We know, from similar studies, that we will be able to know data of great interest from Teresa and also recommendations for the conservation of the relics, but that will be at another stage,” the priest elaborated.
The world is full of wonders and occurrences that cannot be explained away by science. We live in the midst of a world that has been deeply infected by a materialistic worldview. As a result, many have shut their eyes to the possibility of supernatural occurrences, especially any that could be related to an almighty Creator to whom they will be held accountable for their thoughts, words, and deeds.

Even more important than the body of St. Teresa of Avila is the spiritual example she set for us all. May God bless us with the grace to follow that example and glorify His holy Name with not just our lips, but our lives.
