Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, found herself at the center of a controversy that had many across the nation accusing her of blasphemy, a charge that is understandable when you see the eyebrow raising video that started it all. The video, which was shared on social media, featured Whitmer feeding a Dorito to a popular feminist influencer who was down on her knees, in the same manner that many take the Eucharist during worship on Sundays. Whitmer, however, has issued an apology for the video, claiming that it was “misconstrued” and was not intentionally trying to mock Christianity.
“Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something to denigrate someone’s faith. I’ve used my platform to stand up for people’s right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs,” Whitmer went on to say in a statement to Fox 2 Detroit. “My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference. What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that.”
Here’s more from The Christian Tribune:
Michigan Catholic Conference CEO Paul A. Long explained how the position and posture in which Whitmer fed the Dorito to feminist influencer Liz Plank was meant to imitate how Catholic’s receive communion. “It is not just distasteful or ‘strange,’ it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices. While dialogue on this issue with the governor’s office is appreciated, whether or not insulting Catholics and the Eucharist was the intent, it has had an offensive impact,” he said. The Christian Tribune previously reported on backlash from social media users over the video. “How else can this be interpreted other than mockery of Catholics and the sacrament of Holy Communion, not to mention the distasteful pornographic innuendo? Gretchen Whitmer is only the latest example of the gross anti-Catholic bigotry festering inside the Democratic Party.” Another said, “They know precisely the evocative nature of this video and its semblance to Holy Communion This is disrespectful at best.”
Another individual stated in their own comment about the original video, “No Catholic should ever vote Democrat anyway, but unfortunately many do. This ludicrous, perverted, blasphemous little performance should be enough to convince everyone of just how much Democrat elites hate Catholics.” A user also exclaimed,“God will not be mocked! The presence of God in this world – lies in the Holy Eucharist. And while evil may try to mock that, it will always remain true and good, and its power will always be greater than that of evil.”

At least she apologized for the video, which counts for something, right? Christ commands that we forgive those who persecute us, so while Whitmer does indeed stand for policies that go against our values, we can pray for her salvation and well being, while forgiving her for what she did with this clip. That doesn’t mean we vote for her or support her endeavors, just extend to her the same love Jesus gave to us. Never forget that we, too, are unworthy of God’s love. Yet He reached out to us just the same.
